009: LGBT Friendly Places & Facebook Relationship Status

Welcome to the ninth episode of Ok2BeLGBT! For those of you who haven’t listened to us before, we are a show devoted to educating the LGBT community and our allies. Whether you’re new or you are returning, we appreciate you being here with us for the show.

In this episode we talk about how to find LGBT-friendly neighborhoods if you are new in town or just visiting somewhere. There’s a great site called Gay Cities that has an app by the same name. Gay cities allows you to search for gay-friendly neighborhoods, restaurants, bars, etc.

You can also contact local colleges who typically have a PFLAG chapter and/or a gay student alliance organization. HRC’s site is another good resource for finding gay-friendly areas and establishments.

Our next topic of discussion is Facebook’s relationship status options. Two of the newer additions are “It’s complicated” and “Domestic partnership”. But as Molly shares, some people who aren’t gay are actually choosing to say they are in a domestic partnership with one of their friends as a joke.

Now we want to hear from you – what do you think of people who aren’t gay using the domestic partnership status as a joke? Is it a harmless prank or is it demeaning to the LGBT community?

And if you’re traveling to a new town or moving somewhere, how do you find the gayborhoods and the LGBT-friendly places? Or do you even research before you go?
